Self-Image vs. Self-worthPrior to this class I was not aware of this distinction; it was all lumped into self-esteem. Breaking it down into two concepts is helpful because now I can see that there is a difference between how you view yourself (self-image) and the value you place upon yourself (self-worth). This makes it easy to see that even though I know that my worth as a person never changes, how I perceive myself on a day to day basis might. This means the goal isn't to build up a vague sense of self-esteem, but rather bring my self-image in line with my self worth.

InitiativeIn life there are many situations that require a decision to be made or a plan to be formulated. However, sometimes it is difficult for the immediate group to make their own decisions without appeal to a higher authority. I am a firm believer in the principle of subsidiarity (that the people closest to a situation should make decisions about the problem) so I aim to be the kind of person who can step up and keep these decisions local. I also want to be passionate about the cause and trustworthy in order to lead to the best of of my ability.

Connecting with OthersBeing able to engage others in a genuine and open way is another major part of leadership. In my experience, I have learned that good connections rely heavily upon empathy, or the ability for me to relate to the person I want to work with. If I cannot step into their perspective, I will not know how to lead them or how to make them feel understood. In a similar way, I have found that it is necessary to be vulnerable throughout this process so that others will be vulnerable with you. That is what solidifies those connections.

Team BuildingI believe the best way to form a good team is essentially the same process for forming good connections but intentionally repeated between all the members of a specific group. The goal here is to build trust. Dr. Jonas once said "you don't trust people you don't know." If the members cannot be vulnerable with each other, they will not get to know each other and build that trust. The second important aspect is that teams need a shared vision and purpose to unite them. This ensures that all members are working towards the same goal once trust is established.

Self ReflectionInscribed above the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was the phrase "know thyself." This famous expression was the basis for Socratic philosophy. I have continued this rich tradition of introspection by keeping a journal and making time to write down thoughts every so often in order to understand my own strengths and weaknesses. I started journaling when I was 14 and believe that is what got me interested in philosophy and improved my problem-solving and brainstorming abilities.
